Clothing of the 1970’s.

The 1970’s were the first time blue jeans were seen at schools, church and sometimes even work.  Before this time, suits or at least dress shirts were usually worn to work or church.  Teenagers to young adults were joining
into the hippie movement and many were seen with afros or long hair and beards.  The baseball cap became very popular and replaced the common fedora hat.
Although rock music was still popular in the 1970’s, another type of music that became popular was folk music.  Thus, many people dressed to this style, especially woman.  For woman, this was usually a skirt, some type of shirt, boots and either no hat or a cowboy hat.  Men folk singers usually wore some bright colored flannel shirt along with cowboy boots.

Two primary examples of 1970 folk singers are Bob Dylan and John Denver.

The 1970’s were a time of rebellion and freedom, thus both men and woman wore whatever they felt like wearing. Many woman wore mini skirts or very abstract colored clothing  to draw attention.  Men tried to draw attention by
growing beards of having different hair styles.

During the 1970’s, Bell Bottom pants also become very popular for woman, but that fad quickly faded into the 1980’s and has not returned since.
